The Codex 1300 Project is going to replicate the efforts of monks who produced huge bibles in the North East 1,300 years ago. One of our year 6 pupil has had his work published in this amazing bible.
Abbot Ceolfrith, of the Wearmouth-Jarrow monastery, began the project to create the illuminated Codex Amiatinus bible in the late Seventh Century and three were made over several years. Now, as part of the Codex 1300 commemoration of that literary pilgrimage to Rome, a leather bound copy of the “Children’s Codex” will leave St Peter’s Church in Sunderland in June to be presented to Pope Francis in the Vatican.
The Children’s Codex will first visit Westminster Abbey to be signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, before continuing its journey to Rome, where it will be put on permanent display in the Vatican.
A copy of this beautiful book was shown to the children in assembly and will be on display at St Peter’s church in Monkwearmouth.
